In quite a few years of involvement with technical theatre in the UK (mostly non-professional, but I have worked as house technician in theatres which receive small-scale touring professional shows) I have never come across this term, and if I heard it I would not immediately connect it with sound.
I wonder if it is limited to (eg) large professional musicals? If so, it should say so. (I know there's a note that in smaller shows it may be called 'sound operator', but that is buried in the text).
