[edit] An Appeal
Please do not Vandalize this page with unnecessary links to pages (especially in the education and economy sections). If you do want to edit this page please please follow guidlines stated by the Wikiproject Indian cities. There are some great articles on Indian Cities on Wikipedia. Please follow the editorial pattern set by those cities.

I have removed certain parts from the Education section. These lines reflected individual opinions and were generally unrelated to Pune (the city).

[edit] marketing gimmick?
the section on food has the mention of a 'thali' available at a restaurant and also has its contact number . shouldn't it be deleted ? they have slipped in a bit of advertising which is of little use to a user seeking general information on pune . i am removing it. also someone please change the indic text for bhakarwadi , the marathi word is incorrectly spelt.
[edit] Clean up tag
I have removed this as it has been on the article 3 months and the article looks great to me, better than many city articles. Ras Billy I 14:52, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Names of companies
It seems that there is a mad rush for everyone who is reading this article to mention his/her company name among the prominent companies list. Please mention only those companies that are truly Indian or global GIANTS. Not every IT or any other company at every corner in Pune should be mentioned. Please avoid this tempation to keep the info truly meaningful.
I fully agree. Ras Billy I 19:14, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Cleanup of History
In the view of a brief history of the city being present as a initial point, i think the History topic should be slightly edited. Mayuresh 19:59, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
In the "Name" section, it says "Pune started out as Punak-vishy — an agricultural settlement in the 7th century" whereas in the "History" section, the first line reads "Pune started out as Punnaka — an agricultural settlement in the 8th century." Can someone please correct either the first or the second sentence (both the name and the correct century)?
-
- I've edited this section so that it makes more sense; although I'm not an authority on the history of the place. I have it as founded in the first century and simply evolving its name to "Punnaka" by the 8th century. Someone should correct this if I've got it wrong. --Quywompka 13:38, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] This isn't a site to vent your anger!
A lot of the language used in this article is absolutely apalling. In the demographics section, Punekars are described as smug, khadoos, blah, blah... In the same way, the road transport section claims the roads are the shittiest, and a nexus between some people and some other people. While these and more might be popular opinions, this is no place to express them! Do NOT write such crap here! Go vent your anger on some other website. Remember that wikipedia is ONLY for factual information, not crazed vitriol.
[edit] education section
i have spent all morning today revising education and trimming it vastly, putting the old material on Education in Pune. please format this article and add the major changes to it. i have added a few research institutes to the education section, and if you know other research institutes of NATIONAL STATURE, please add their names and a link.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, please stop adding colleges to the education list. Add to the List_of_Pune_Colleges if you wish to mention your college, and create a new article for it if the need arises. Prominent institutions such as COEP are in the main article just for an example. adding colleges and company names endlessly is no more than chest-thumping and looks ridiculous to a non-punekar.
i havent lived in pune for some time now, so if some of the facts are wrong, please feel free to correct them. if you have a nice picture of pune university or a college building, please add it.

[edit] Regarding dedicated section on biodiversity and environment in the city
Soon I am going to initiate a section on biodiversity in the city. It will have a general introduction and information on trees, herbs, insects, butterflies and birds of Pune. There are tables and ckecklists of all these. I would like to know appropriate location to add the tables. Think Positive 12:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] All Peths In Pune City
May I have a reason to this deletion? All it needs is more links, cites, and perhaps a grammatical recreation. --Shanesan 07:25, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] name origin controversy introduced by 128.32.14.222
i have removed the following comment in the name section, since it does not mention any relevance to the name of the city. can someone confirm that the city may have derived its name from the Punyeshwar temple? also hindujagruti.org seems to be a religiously biased information source? are there more secular and credible sources for the same information
even if the information is correct, it is written in a very inflammatory style ("insignificant muslim zealots"??) and needs to be re-written. --ti 20:52, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
"Few know that Pune had 2 big temples Punyeshwar and Narayaneshwar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu respectively. They were built by Yadav rulers. However, barbaric muslim rulers in 11th century destroyed those temples. Dargah related to insignificant muslim zealots were built on the ruins of temples by them. Dargah on Punyeshwar temple is called "Thorla Shaikh Sallah". Recently, ruins from temples were discovered when dargah collapsed recently [1]"
[edit] Languages
It says though the mail language of Pune is Marathi, several other languages are spoken. Apart from Marathi, Hindi is the only other language widely spoken. Its true that Pune has people come from all over India, but give me a break .... general public do not speak Gujarati, Kannada or Tulu. Why not add Bengali, Tamil, Telugu & Malayalam ???? I guess its some Karnataka guy who is vandalising all the articles related to Maharashtrian cities. It Kolhapur...Solapur and now even Pune. Just refer to the Solapur article; they are talking as if Solapur was a 100 % Kannada speaking city and Maharashtra has just hijacked it. Even the Kolhapur page mentions the language to be spoken as Marathi & Kannada. Give me a break...........Come on Marathi Wikipedians ...do something
- i agree. gujarati can be mentioned with other indian languages, but kannada and tulu are just not popular. we can link to the long-time pune authority [1] if needed as a reference. --ti 17:46, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Obscure information
There are some sections under Biodiversity which are totally obscure and have no significant w.r.t Pune city. e.g Fungi
71 genera belonging to 68 genera from 28 families have so far been reported. Ascomycetes members are represented by 4 genera belonging to 4 families. The remaining 64 genera belong to Basidiomycetes, with mushrooms constituting 38 of them from 12 families, Gastromycetes constituting 13 genera from 10 families and polypores constituting another 13 genera from 6 families.
We should remove such information from the main page. There could be a seperate "Biodiversity in Pune" page with a link to it on the main page.
- hi salil, i completely agree, it looks very ridiculous. we can still keep a small section for "Biodiversity in Pune" with link to the main article. --ti 17:44, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- If anywhere, biodiversity should be discussed at Pune District rather than here, as it is certainly more relevant to a large district including many rural areas rather than a city of 4.4 million people. —Angr 12:43, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Economy section rephrased
I have rephrased Economy section. It seemed that each user had appended information without taking cue of what is written above or below. Each line ended with "some x industry is also in pune". "... also in pune" was repeated many times. This has been removed and industries are now categorised. Each paragraph says about particular type of industry.
Also details like T-system is shifted to ICC, etc are removed. We don't need such minute details in encyclopedia.
I invite disscussion on this change.
Also i have started a new sub sub section, "List of majors having headquaters in pune". Help in growing it. Once big enough we can create a new category.
Please talk before u edit/delete. spacejuncky 06:10, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] All peths in pune city
Can we move all peths of pune city to history... :)
I mean, i think a section on peths of pune city is more suited as sub section of 'history'. Afterall the concept of peths and its nomencleture have history behind them, also this is unique to pune so cant be a main section. Main sections should remain as standard as possible. Please reply.
spacejuncky 06:05, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- hi spacejunky, i think we should start a separate section titled Neighborhoods and write about the peths there. i had suggested this as a subsection for template of indian cities on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Indian_cities, but noone followed up on it. maybe we should do that.. --ti 19:34, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 7th largest?
i think it is definitely 8th largest by any standard -city/metro area. mumbai, delhi, {calcutta, chennai, hydie, bangalore}, ahmedabad and only then pune. what is it that makes people want to inch up one place in these rankings!? --ti 19:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] name origin
is it punyanagari punnaka punyavishy or something else? can someone add references.. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tejas81 (talk • contribs) 22:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Peths
Sub section Peths is currently in History section. If feel it should be in Culture section. What do you guys say?
spacejuncky 11:16, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Poona??
Is use of name "Poona" (generally pronounced by non-marathi speakers- Atleast pronounced in Gujarati and Hindi) worth mentioning? spacejuncky 06:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
- NO. Pune is the official name of the city and different communities can call city with different names;that doesnt mean we include all. Maharashtraexpress 14:52, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] panoramic photo
added one, with code lifted from Atlanta. i am sure someone can take a better panoramic picture in better light and better editing from a better location. please do so and replace this one! lets add more photos to Pune! --ti 15:37, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Peacock terms
Hi, I agree there may be many peacock terms in whole article. For a while I am working in citing references of the facts presented in article Pune. Regarding eliminating peacock terms, I am dealing with one section at a time. In introductory para for example; for first line in second paragraph "...widely considered the cultural capital..." I have cited refrences which suggests that it is indeed called cultural capital. Same is the case with second line "... several esteemed colleges and educational institutions...". Now after citing these references, which justify above statments, do they still be considered having peacock terms
