Quarry Hill, Leeds
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quarry Hill in Leeds, United Kingdom is a small district to the east of Leeds city centre that is surrounded by the A61 and A64 roads and the Leeds - York / Hull railway.
Between 1938 and 1978 Quarry Hill was home to what was at the time the largest social housing complex in the United Kingdom and it was noted for then radical features such as solid fuel ranges, electric lighting, a state-of-the-art refuse disposal system and communal facilities. However due to poor construction methods and general social problems seen with such developments the Quarry Hill flats were demolished in 1978. Between 1970 and 1972 Quarry Hill was featured on the ITV / Yorkshire Television situation comedy Queenies Castle which starred Diana Dors.
Since the 1980s it has been a focus for regeneration within this city and today is home to the West Yorkshire Playhouse which opened in 1990, Quarry House which houses the Department for Work & Pensions and Department of Health in 1993 and also is now home to BBC Yorkshire and the Leeds College of Music. Development that should complete the regeneration of this area of Leeds is anticipated to occur within the next few years.
