Quentin Costa (Nip/Tuck episode)

Quentin Costa is the finale to the third season of the FX TV series Nip/Tuck. It was written and directed by series creator Ryan Murphy, and is the conclusion to the often talked about The Carver storyline, which had been prevalent throughout the third season.

A house full of sorority girls is attacked by The Carver, and the doctors are called to the scene, where they meet Kit. They tell her that they've been asked by the parent of one particular girl to fix her daughter's face. They find the girl and she tells them that she walked in on The Carver as he was raping her friend, and that's when she saw it-he didn't have a penis. Rather, he was using a strap on. Realising that this once again makes Quentin a viable suspect, the police storm his house, only to find him tied to a bed, his cheeks slashed and 'I CAN'T STOP' written in blood above him. The doctors are at first reluctant to fix his face, but, after hearing his story, decide to do so. As they perform the surgery, Kit interrupts and arrests Liz. Meanwhile, Matt is speaking with Ariel. They argue briefly, but it turns out it's all a trick, as Mr. Alderman forces his way into the car and drives them away. Sean goes in to check on Quentin post-surgery, but is knocked out from behind by The Carver. After Sean falls to the floor, he removes his mask and we see it is Quentin; Gina is in the bed, her cheeks carved. Sean and Christian wake up tied to separate operating tables. Quentin walks between them, taunting them, and explaining how he is not a madman, as they might suspect. This builds up to him cutting off Sean's pinkie finger. Running parallel to this is a scene in which Matt and Cherry are similarly tied up in Mr Alderman's basement and tortured. Initially, Alderman goes to cut off Matt's penis but decides he can't do it, and decides to instead force Matt to cut off Cherry's penis. He tries to resist but, a gun pointed at him, he does it. Quentin, dissatisfied at simply removing a finger, decides to go for Sean's thumbs. Christian stops him, however, and offers himself. Quentin decides that Christian must remove his own hand. Just before he can do this, however, Quentin is shot and killed by Kit. Out in the woods, Mr Alderman attempts to get Matt to bury the bleeding Cherry alive. Matt ends up walking away, saying how he doesn't 'care anymore'. Cherry comes up behind Alderman and knocks him down with the shovel. Matt encourages her to shoot him. She does so, though we do not see the result. After explaining to them Quentin's history, Kit leaves. Sean is confused by something she said, however, and goes to the convent where he supposedly grew up. More contradictions arise here, culminating in the sister showing the doctors a Christmas card of Quentin and his sister and them realising that Kit is his sister. It is not known what the doctors do with this new found information. In Spain, Quentin and Kit sit by a pool. He criticizes her for telling the doctors his entire history, which she defends by saying that she 'needed them to understand you'. As they sip drinks, Quentin notices a woman walking by. Kit tries to discourage him, but Quentin follows the woman, presumably to carve her. In a similar not unlike the previous two seasons, Sean, Christian and Julia prepare for dinner. Sean's finger has been reattached. Matt walks in and joins them, as Julia takes Sean aside. She hands him a file, which he sees is the deed to the house. She says she'd like to move back in, but only if he's here. They hug, a secret already between them-Julia's baby and what might be wrong with it.

• Several hours prior to the airing of this episode, pictures of The Carver revealed were posted on FX's own website. They were quickly taken down, but not before several fans had had the chance to save them.
• Fan reaction to this episode was very strong, with some liking the brother-sister twist, and others hating that The Carver-arguably the most talked about point of this season-turned out to be the most predictable character.
• This episode leaves open the story of Quentin and Kit which has not, as of the Season 4 finale, been resolved.
