Quentin Curry (born 1972, Johnstown, Pennsylvania) is an artist based in New York.
He has shown work in many exhibitions including “Modern Amusements” at 63 Eleven Gallery [1] in Seattle, “Outdoor Sculpture Show” at DNA Gallery [2] in Provincetown, “Line” at Markham Murray Gallery in New York and “Urban Organics” at Nightingale Gallery [3] in Watermill. He is represented by Kantor/Feuer [4] in Los Angeles.
Quentin Curry makes highly textured paintings of semi-abstract landscapes in the quiet aftermath of simple disasters. His colours have a slightly washed-out feeling, as if they have been exposed to the rigours of nature that feature in his compositions; this is due to Curry’s method of applying paint whereby he paints through the weave of various fabrics onto his canvases. This gives his surfaces unpredictable textures which look more natural than constructed by the hand of man. The contrast between man-made and organic is a key part of Curry’s work. His paintings act as a means of seeking balance between the two in composition and also in material and method; he sometimes paints onto squares of industrial materials so that his mixture of abstract shape and realistic features are leant the credibility of appearing to be the time-worn result of contact with the environment.
