"Raindrops" is a dance music song released in 2006, the first international hit by the relatively new production team Stunt. Produced in the United Kingdom by Pete Kirtley and Mark Dowling, its synthesizer-based rhythm and powerful vocals by student Molly Smithen-Dowes have made it a top 40 hit single in the U.S., UK, and Canada, reaching #18 on the World Dance/Trance Top 30 Singles charts in April 2006. As remixing is popular in dance music communities, at least six different mixes have been released.[1] Lyrically, "Raindrops" compares the feeling of "raindrops on my skin" to love.
According to the Ministry of Sound, who initially published the work, "Molly was spotted at an open mic night by Pete Kirtley who was completely blown away by her talent. In a matter of days Molly was in a studio recording the vocals and Raindrops was created!"[2] An early report by the Guildford Borough Council further describes Smithen-Downes' involvement in the piece:
Molly Smithen-Downes, a student at Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music, recorded the a [sic] song called "Raindrops" which had already received airtime on commercial radio and BBC 1 in November, two months before going on general release. In co-operation with a former student, Dave Valler, she also wrote the lyrics and melody to a backing track owned by Jiant Productions; the song was to be released through Ministry of Sound, with whom Molly and Dave signed a publishing deal which, it was hoped, might lead to a career of stardom.[1]
A large portion of the song's success is attributed to the synth-based sample of Sash!'s UK hit Encore Une Fois, although it is modernised and developed.
