Superband are a Indie|Crapcore band that was formed in 2004 in Torpoint, Cornwall.

The band consists of Dom Cruise (vocals, guitar, keyboard, harmonica), Huggy B (bass, vocals), Philip Cent (vocals, guitar, keyboard) and Adam Wherly (drums). They are well known for creating highly controversial and almost unlistenable music.

[edit] History

In the summer of 2004 whilst watching a battle of the bands competition, Hughsie Grant decided to form a band to take part in the competition despite the fact that he was very very drunk. The band consisted of drummer Dom Cruise (who did not in fact like Hughsie Grant at this time) Philip Cent on guitar and vocals and Leon Eveleigh on bass guitar. 10 minutes later, Leon Eveleigh quit the band and was replaced by Jack Smale. They named themselves Superband.

The band went on stage and played a very drunken set for 45 minutes, despite the 20 minute time slot they were given. This angered a lot of the adults who had turned up to watch their childrens bands play but most of the kids in the crowd enjoyed it, realising the joke.

This should have been the end of Superband but as luck would have it, 3 months later Hughsie Grant bumped into Dom Cruise in a night club and they remembered about the band they formed so decided that the next day they would record an album.

They got in contact with Philip Cent but could not get hold of Jack Smale so they went to the studio as a 3-piece with all 3 members sharing duties on vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and a variety of other strange instruments that they didnt know how to play. The date they started recording the album was September 11th 2004.

They called the album "The War Is Coming" which became a local cult classic. It featured the soon to be live favourites Blue Moon, It's Spinach, In Da Lights and Dan Borderman Is A Disgrace, a song about a fellow contestant at the previously mentioned Battle Of The Bands competition. The album also featured the single There's No Easy Way Out, a cover of the song by Robert Tepper which appeared on Rocky IV.

[edit] There's No Easy Way Out

In May of 2006, the band announced they were going on hiatus. "We're going to take a very long break after Ozzfest and do our own things." Guitarist Daron Malakian has confirmed the break will probably last a few years, but insists that the band is not splitting up. He tells MTV, "We're not breaking up. If that was the case, we wouldn't be doing this Ozzfest. "We're going to take a very long break after Ozzfest and do our own things. We've done System for over 10 years, and I think it's healthy for us to get away from it for a while and come back to it later on. So, this is probably going to be... well, it's not a farewell tour, but it's going to be a little while before we go out again." He adds, "I'll always be a member of System Of A Down. That will never change. There's no rule that says you have to make records constantly, like clockwork, to continue being who you are. Daron Malakian claims that he needs a break from the band because he wants to live his life more. He has written the majority of the songs for the band for ten straight years.[1]

[edit] Influences

System of a Down’s main influence is mostly from early alternative rock bands, as well as from heavy metal, punk rock, jazz, fusion, Armenian folk music, classic rock, blues and industrial genres. The band has used a wide range of instruments, including baritone electric guitars, electric mandolins, sitars, 12-string classical guitars and middle eastern ouds.

[edit] Nu-Metal dispute

There is some contention over the band's genre regarding whether they are nu metal, which can carry negative connotations to some, or alternative metal.

System of a Down have been labeled as "nu metal" by some fans and media since their incarnation. This can be attributed to the release of their first album, which occurred during the nu metal boom of the mid-to-late '90s. The band also toured with Ozzfest, a festival that typically features many up-and-coming nu metal bands. Their music features guitar solos in the intro as well as solos, a common trait of traditional metal bands. However, the band does not show many other traits associated with the metal genre, thus voiding many fans' claims that S.O.A.D's music is metal.

Those who disagree with the nu metal label argue that System of a Down uses no rapping or turntables in any of their songs. Such hip-hop influences are typical traits of nu metal.

Guitarist Daron Malakian has said in a Guitar World interview that he is glad System of a Down has not slipped into the nu metal genre. During a 2005 concert, he announced, "They used to call us nü-metal, now they call us prog rock. I think they'll call us anything that's popular."

In a 2005 interview with the Houston Press, Malakian said, "Lately, we've been doing interviews, and people have been like, 'You guys are really leading the way for the new prog movement,' and I'm like, 'What?' Because a couple of years ago, these guys were comparing us to Limp Bizkit and Korn, and now that we're still here and those bands aren't, they're talking about prog. It's just kind of aggravating that people always have to have something to compare us to, or bunch us up with. I'm not saying we're the most original band in the world, but I don't really feel that we fall into a heavy-metal category or a pure rock category. There's a lot of stuff mixed up into one. Lyrics tackle serious issues such as the Armenian Genocide as well jokes and humorous lyrics such as in "Vicinity of Obscenity" and "She's Like Heroin."' [citation needed]

[edit] Armenian Genocide issue

All four of the band members are of Armenian ancestry, and are trying to encourage the US government to recognize the Armenian Genocide. They have shed some light on such a sensitive issue through their lyrics. "P.L.U.C.K." (Politically Lying Unholy Cowardly Killers) is a song about the Genocide. In the album booklet it says: "System Of A Down would like to dedicate this song to the memory of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Turkish Government in 1915." The Armenian Genocide is still highly sensitive in certain communities, and until recently has been taboo to speak of in public within Turkey. The government of Turkey still denies that the events were genocide, despite a large body of evidence to the contrary. Other songs about the Armenian Genocide include "X," "Chop Suey!" and "Holy Mountains."

[edit] Meaning of a Song

System of a Down, in each song, has a meaning behind. As the "Armenian Genocide Issue" states. Others have issues with the government, such as the American government. Usually in sync with "bring down the government" and "corruption." The band express's things such as this clearly through songs, such as "Deer Dance" and "Sugar."
