Rear admiral is a commissioned Starfleet officer rank in the fictional Star Trek universe.
The 22nd century Earth Starfleet includes the rank of rear admiral, held by Daniel Leonard in the Star Trek: Enterprise pilot episode, "Broken Bow".
James T. Kirk was promoted to rear admiral and served as chief of Starfleet operations for two and a half years before the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.[1]
The first 24th century flag officer to appear is Rear Admiral Mark Jameson in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Too Short a Season". Gregory Quinn subsequently wears the same rank insignia as Jameson in "Coming of Age". Flag officers who wear the insignia with the addition of a single pip appear in the "Conspiracy".
No one-pip rear admirals appear after the transition to a pip-based admiral rank system; only two-pip rear admirals, such as Erik Pressman in "The Pegasus", appear beyond TNG's first season.
Rear Admiral Bennett wears a four-pip insignia in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?".
