[edit] Retired Numbers
My roommate and I were reading the Wikipedia article on Red Grange last night and according to the article his number is one of three retired numbers at the University of Illinois. As Illinois' students we were curious as to who the other numbers belonged to and we did a bit of research and unfortunately didn't find much. In fact, we couldn't even find evidence supporting anyone's number being retired on any university website; however, a few messageboard posts and the Wikipedia article on Dick Butkus both pointed towards Grange and Butkus having the only two retired numbers in Illini history. Consequently, we decided to edit the Red Grange article and change it to state that his number is one of only two to be retired throughout Illini history. We'd appreciate it if anyone else could shed some light on this issue.
