[edit] Things that amuse me
I'm an attorney & an entreprenuer, specializing in innovative legal education through means such as the Washington State Bar Association's Section on Peace Through Law[1] (including our program of educational events, see peacelaw.wikidot.com/. I'm also reprinting the Memoirs of William Sampson[2], the writings of an important early American/Irish human rights lawyer.
[edit] Quotations that should be less obscure
- "I often wonder why men set so much value upon ancestry. For as all moralists agree, that fraud and violence prevail in this life over gentleness and virtue; so to say that we had great ancestors, is too often the same as to say, that we descend from great knaves." - William Sampson, "Causes of the Troubles in Ireland" (1817), [1]
- "When a man finds a conclusion agreeable, he accepts it without argument, but when he finds it disagreeable, he will bring against it all the forces of logic and reason." - Thucydides
- ""Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living." - General Omar Bradley
- "Any time you hear the United States Government talking about wiretap, it requires --- a wiretap requires a court order." - G.W. Bush
[edit] Pages I started
[edit] Pacific NW History
- Henry Roberts (captain) - minor historical figure, after whom Point Roberts, Washington was named
- HMS Chatham (1788) - a less-well-known part of our Puget Sound history
- Joseph Baker (captain) - first European to spot Mt. Baker and among those who were first to reach the summit of Mauna Loa
- Joseph Whidbey - sailing master, engineer & fossil finder
- Mother Damnable - a legendary figure of early Seattle
- Patkanim - most powerful Indian on Puget Sound
- Sir Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner - captain and mentor to many Puget Sound explorers
- St. Edward Seminary - I know about this from being an alumnus
- Thomas Pitt, 2nd Baron Camelford - sailor, baron and wastrel
- Vancouver Expedition - an important part of West Coast history.
- Washington State Bar Association - I used to work there. It's noteworthy.
- Zachary Mudge - the man for whom Puget Sound was *almost* named
[edit] Other
- AFROMET - a project for cultural repatriation of looted Ethiopean goods
- Angel of Hadley - truth or legend? a rippin' yarn either way!
- Confederated Tribes of Siletz - I gotta family connection
- Confessional Privilege (United States) - Needed this for the Sampson article. The parent Confession(al) Seal article is very out of date w/r/t American Law
- Knights of the Dinner Table Illustrated - an interesting spinoff, although somewhat violent
- List of Iraq War Resisters - like it says
- Metallic Metals Act - a remarkable hoax cited in a study; but was the study itself a hoax?
- Solson Publications - I briefly owned a copy of their comic Reagan's Raiders. It was just as aweful as rumors
- Sword Of Sorcery - I used to have a complete run of this comic. Of course, that was only 5 issues.
- Towereroo - in his day, the most far-travelled of Hawai'ians; he never got to marry his girlfriend
- William Sampson (attorney) - I know about this guy from editting his memoirs
[edit] Pages I like to keep an eye on
- Admission to the bar in the United States - I worked at a state bar for several years, so this is a favorite topic of mine. It's a complicated subject, so I assume the page will continue to be heavily editted
- Hamdan v. Rumsfeld
- Peter Puget - explorer and sea dog
- Saint Edward State Park - I'm an alum of the school that later became this park. It's even better now that it's a park!
- Raymond Hunthausen and Society of Saint-Sulpice - added info about St. Ed's
- Sigilverse: a universe destroyed by bankruptcy. Kinda ironic
- Signing_statement
- Theobald Wolfe Tone - added information gleaned from the memoirs of William Sampson (attorney)
