Robert Henry Brand, 1st Baron Brand

Robert Henry Brand, 1st Baron Brand (October 30, 1878 – August 23, 1963) was a British civil servant, businessman, and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.
His father Henry Brand, 2nd Viscount Hampden had been Governor of New South Wales, while his grandfather, the 1st Viscount, was speaker of the House of Commons.
Brand graduated from New College, Oxford in 1901 and subsequently gained his fellowship at All Souls.
From 1902, during the period of reconstruction following the Second Boer War, he joined Alfred Milner's Civil Service in South Africa, where he was appointed "Secretary of the Intercolonial Council of the Transvaal and Orange River Colony", and was thus seen as a member of "Milner's Kindergarten", an informal reference to those who served under Lord Milner during this period. Brand later became a partner and managing director in Lazard Brothers and Company.
In 1917, he married Phyllis Langhorne, sister to Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor. In 1946 he was made Baron Brand by George VI. The title expired upon his death.
