Robert Kearns (Loma Linda HOA President)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert (Bob) Kearns is the President of the Loma Linda Homeowners association (HOA) in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Bob Kearns made national news when he attempted to force homeowner Lisa Jensen to remove a Christmas wreath shaped like a peace symbol displayed on her home in November 2006.
Kearns claimed that Jensen's peace symbol offended some members of the association and demanded she remove it. He declined to name those who felt offended, although he appeared to be one of them. When the association's architectural control committee refused to force the homeowner to remove it, Kearns fired all of the committee members and instituted a $25 per day fine against Jensen.
The committee had determined that the wreath was simply a seasonal display, but Kearns claimed that it was a satanic anti-war sign. "It’s also an anti-Christ sign. That’s how it started,” he said.
The story was featured on Yahoo's home page on November 27, 2006. An unorganized grassroots campaign in support of Jensen commenced immediately. Telephone numbers, email addresses and street addresses for Kearns and the town of Pagosa Springs were posted on Yahoo's message boards. Within hours Kearns' telephone line had been disconnected and a statement on the Pagosa Springs town web site stated that the Loma Linda Subdivision was not located within the town limits and that the town had no jurisdiction in the matter.
Throughout the day, Jensen received hundreds of calls from strangers offering moral and financial support. It is unknown what kind of calls Kearns received.
By the end of the day, the board of directors of the Loma Linda HOA had apologized and declared that they would rescind the demand for the wreath's removal.
