Roseto Valfortore

Roseto Valfortore is a town and comune in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. Today, there are 1,350 Rosetani that inhabit the small town which is located over 650 meters above sea level. The area surrounding Roseto is mountainous with the river Fortore running through the town. Hence the name, Valfortore (valley of Fortore). There have been numerous waves of migrations from the town of Roseto Valfortore over the past century. One of the first waves of immigrants to settle in the United States of America was in the early 1880s. They settled in the Poconos and created the settlement of Roseto, Pennsylvania, that was eventually incorporated in 1912. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's more than 3,000 Rosetani migrated to Toronto, Ontario and surrounding area.
