Rothorpe = Ro(bert) Thorpe, EFL teacher from London, living in Portugal, formerly also in France, Italy and Germany. My unpublished 60,000-word Pronouncing Spelling - Not the International Phonetic Alphabet uses a sophisticated accent system to show pronunciation: ‘Wikipedia, the online self-styled ‘free encyclopaedia that anyone can edit’, is an excellent thing, but it exhibits an inevitable and jarring juxtaposition. Immaculate use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in many entries exists alongside amateurish and ambiguous efforts to show pronunciation in others. This is not surprising, because most people see no reason to learn the IPA. They may be interested in pronunciation, but they are not linguists. This, and the fact that the IPA takes no account of whether a spelling is regular, bizarre, or in-between, highlights the need that English has for a standard system of easily-typed accents using actual spelling. This purpose of this study is to introduce one, and to uncover the facts of spelling in the process…’
