Sand Lake is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 7,987.
The Town of Sand Lake is in the south-central part of the county. Sand Lake is east of Albany, New York.

The town was first settled around 1765. The town was formed in 1812 from the Towns of Greenbush and Berlin. In 1843, part of the town reverted to Greenbush. The Town of Poestenkill was founded in 1848 from the northern part of Sand Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.6 km² (36.2 mi²). 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²) of it (2.63%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,987 people, 3,009 households, and 2,229 families residing in the town. The population density was 87.6/km² (226.9/mi²). There were 3,277 housing units at an average density of 35.9/km² (93.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.32% White, 0.21% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.83% of the population.
There were 3,009 households out of which 37.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 20.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $57,795, and the median income for a family was $67,742. Males had a median income of $41,168 versus $31,541 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,103. About 4.0% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.

- Crystal Lake -- A lake north of Averill Park.
- Glass Lake -- A hamlet southeast of Averill Park next to a lake called "Sand Lake."
- Maple Grove -- A hamlet southwest of Averill Park.
- Sand Lake -- The hamlet of Sand Lake is east of Averill Park.
- Sliters -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town on Route 150.
- Taborton -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town.
- West Sand Lake -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town.
