[edit] Jay and Silent Bob
I saw you recent redid a large portion of the Jay and Silent Bob page. While I appreciate your concerns, I was forced to revert them. Our goal is to create an honest to God encyclopedia here. The article as you've created does not live up to that goal. Some basic points:
- Though I appreciate your concern that people will be confused if you place Clerks before Mallrats, the article itself makes is abundantly clear that Mallrats takes place before Clerks. To wit, the beginning to the Clerks. synopsis states: "Clerks is the first film to feature Jay and Silent Bob. In the View Askewniverse, its events take place the day after Mallrats," and the beginning to the Mallrats synopsis states "One day prior to the events in Clerks . . ."
- The current revision, in lumping everything together, blurs the lines of what's what. It doesn't say, for example, that Chasing Dogma is a comic. Also, any attempt to put things chronologically (within the View Askewniverse, that is) forces one to speculate on where to place Clerks: The Animated Series. Does this belong after Dogma or before? The article looks better and is more coherent if we divide work up based on the type of media it is.
- The Bluntman and Chronic section is unnecessary. This is about Jay and Silent Bob, not Bluntman and Chronic. It should focus on the lives and times of the Jay and Silent Bob, not Bluntman and Chronic. There already is a Bluntman and Chronic page that deals with them.
- The "Etymology of Jay's Vocabulary" section, though informative, would be better placed in the Jason Mewes, as it describes the evolution of his speaking patterns, not of the fictional character's.
- The quotes, though informative, make the article huge, and unencyclopedic (consider, an encyclopedia article for Gandhi doesn't include a "Gandhi Speaks" section). They could be placed in Wikiquote, Wikipedia's very own database of quotes. A link could be provided in the article itself.
- On the subject of quotes, even if they should be included, you incorrectly transcribed Silent Bob's Chasing Amy quote. No big errors, mind you, but you eliminated a large section where Silent Bob talks to Jay (". . . Bitch, what you don't know about me I could just about squeeze into the Grand Fucking Canyon . . ."). Also, Silent Bob never backhands Jay, he nudges him. And Jay never raises his arm to strike Silent Bob, he just leers at him. Believe me on this one. Before I realized that the quotes were out of place, I spent a good 45 minutes transcribing the quote off of my copy of Chasing Amy.
- Including the movies that are already listed in the article in the "Other Appearances" section makes no sense, and causes the article to be repetitive.
There are probably more reasons, and the above list is by no means exhaustive. I appreciate the fact that you want to create a better, more informative article. Heck, that's why I started editing it. But in doing so, we cannot make the article sloppy. As this seems to be your first edit, I figured I'd give you a detailed explanation as to why I was reverting your edit. Hope you enjoy Wikipedia!
