Scavenging can have the following meanings:
- In chemistry, scavenging consists of any number of chemical reactions whereby certain chemicals (or larger agglomerated particles or organisms) are purged from a given environment by reaction with another chemical.
- In cellular biology, scavenging is the process of removal of (usually unwanted) chemicals such as reactive oxygen species, LDL cholesterol, or bacteria.
- In automotive usage, scavenging is the process of pushing exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder and drawing in a fresh draught of air ready for the next cycle.
- In computer networking, scavenging is the process of cleaning and removing outdated or extinct names data from the DNS database.
