Scilla Elworthy founded the Oxford Research Group (ORG) in 1982 and was Executive Director until December 2003. She is now Chair of the Board of Trustees. ORG is an independent NGO which seeks to develop effective methods whereby people can bring about positive change on issues of national and international security by non-violent means. Having previously been Executive Director of Peace Direct, Scilla is a prolific writer, notably of studies on the role of women in international relations. She was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2003 and has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with ORG. She is an internationally recognized figure in the field of conflict resolution, particularly for her focus on non-violence, and her work in developing alternatives to violent conflict.
