[edit] Early Career
His first big break was in 1992 while filming in Washington, D.C. at a NORML rally. After shooting a speech of Dhoruba Bin Wahad the notable Black Panther activist who was arrested later that day, he was approached by Jon Valadez regarding the footage Caplan had shot. This footage was later used in Valadez' documentary: Passin' It On - The Black Panthers' Search for Justice (1993). Caplan received a contributing filmmaker credit for his work in the film. Excerpts of the footage of that speech can be seen here.
Scott previously worked for Major League Baseball for 4 years as a video editor and cameraman. He has several cameraman and editor credits on historical baseball documentaries to his name (see Filmography below).
Shortly after leaving Major League Baseball, Scott began to shoot journalism pods on spec for Current TV, a brief breakdown of his early work before it was broadcast on their network is listed below]:
[edit] Current TV Videos
- His first story was about a goofy guy named Kieran Vogel who was on a web-show called OurPrisoner: the first 24 hour a day, 7 day a week reality show. Kieran has recently finished his 6-month imprisonment at OurPrisoner.com. Scott and Kieran immediately hit it off, and after 15 years behind a video & film camera, Scott became an interviewer and created his first video for Current TV called Our Prisoner. The video received some cult status with the OurPrisoner.com web-viewing audience, rising to #16 in their ranking system, but never made it on the air.
- For his second story, he contacted press agents for Magnolia Pictures to get information regarding interviewing Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady who worked together on the film The Boys of Baraka, and were now the co-directors of the controversial film Jesus Camp. After many phone calls and emails Scott was allowed to show up with his cameraman Rick Hutchison and conducted a 20 minute interview with these two directors. Jesus Camp was posted on Current TV on 9/23/06 and picked for airplay 1 month later.
- Scott then immediately jumped on the opportunity to interview the director Gabriel Range, who was under fire in the media for his film Death of a President, which portrayed the fictional assassination the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, and the political aftermath in America of this fictional event. The media, including such notable politicians as Senator Hillary Clinton, had condemned the film. Scott felt this characterization and condemnation of the film in the media was uncalled for. On 10.25.2006 he presented his 3rd video at Current TV, Death of a President. It rocketed to the top of the ranks in a week, and was picked for television airplay.
- On 12.15.06 Scott interviewed Academy Award nominee actor Edward Norton, director John Curran, and academy award winning screenwriter (Philadelphia (film)) Ron Nyswaner about their 34 million dollar independent film, The Painted Veil, distributed by Warner Independent Pictures. Following the same format as the previous pods, the pod was posted on Current TV's website as The Painted Veil and is currently in voting for television broadcast ar Current TV's website.
