Second Wave

Second Wave is a fictional terrorist group from the television series 24. They were responsible for attempting to detonate a nuclear bomb over L.A. during Day 2^[1], Which was leaked to the Counter Terrorist Unit and the United States government by one of their members. Afterwards, they were thought to be supported by three Middle Eastern states.^[2]

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM		Syed Ali is the known leader of Second Wave. After kidnapping and torturing Kate, he goes to pray one last time before being captured and interrogated by Bauer. While captured, he witnessed the staged death of one of his sons. He is killed by a sniper, Coral Snake Member Jonathan Wallace, while being transported to Guantanamo Camp for interrogation shortly after the bomb went off safely away from the city.
02:00 PM - 03:00 PM		Mamud Rasheed Faheen is a member in Second Wave. He was the only member not to know the location of the nuke, but apparently knew Ali, since he knew his last location. He was captured by CTU, and refused to speak to Nina, who he declared a traitor.^[3] He withstood protection^[4] and warnings^[5] from Nina at first, but eventually opened up, resulting in his death.
12:00 AM - 01:00 AM		Nina Myers is an ex-CTU agent to the US who supplied Wald schemetics of CTU before she was discovered as a mole by Bauer in Season One, unaware of the bigger plot surrounding the bomb^[6]. Nina's only presummed connection to Second Wave is Faheen. After successfully helping CTU find Ali, and attempting to kill Bauer, she was granted immunity and deported to Africa.
08:00 AM - 09:00 AM		Marie Warner is a Second Wave agent converted by Syed Ali when she ran away from home when a child. With her connection with Reza, her fiance and one of her father's workers, she sealed a deal that allowed Second Wave to get a container for the nuke^[7] from her father's CIA-approved^[8] company. She was supposed to be out of L.A. on her honeymoon by the time the bomb went off, but problems arising with CTU prevented that. She killed Reza when he found out too much. Warner was captured and questioned by Bauer at Norton Airfield. Afterwards, she was held in detention at CTU.

[edit] Cyprus recording

The Cyprus recording is the second and last major arc of Season 2. Alex Hewitt, a genius at sound alteration was "used" by Peter Kingsley to create a tape recording of Syed Ali talking with three high-ranking Middle-Eastern officials about the nuke in Los Angeles. Just before Ali's death, Jack asked Ali if the tape recording was real. Ali replied that "what I told the girl [Michelle Dessler] was correct" (Ali had told Michelle earlier that he never had that conversation with the three Middle-Eastern officials). Seconds later, Ali was assassinated by Wallace. This made Bauer confident that the Cyprus tape had been forged.

With the help of Coral Snake member Wallace, he recovers a chip, containing data that proved the forgery, hidden within the former's body, but the chip ends up damaged beyond repair. He then tracks down Hewitt thanks to salvaged data on the chip, but unexpectedly encounters Sherry Palmer as well. Jack planned to grant Hewitt immunity to all charges, but Hewitt tried to escape. Jack followed him and was forced to shoot him in the leg, which caused him to fall off a building. He later died from a head injury as a result of this fall.

Jack used Sherry Palmer's connection with Kingsley to arrange a meeting, trading Alex Hewitt (Kingsley not aware that Alex died shortly before) for the recordings of Sherry and Kingsley. This was a cover, though, as she really didn't want the tapes, but just to get Kingsley to unknowingly confess that the Cyprus recording was forged. Sherry was wired when she met with Kingsley, giving a live audio feed to both CTU and President Palmer. Kingsley admitted that the recordings were fake, but decided to kill Sherry, sensing something wasn't right. Jack Bauer saves the day, kills Kingsley's henchmen, and is finally saved himself thanks to a CTU chopper sniping down Kingsley who was about to kill a disarmed and wounded Jack.

Kingsley and Max paid Hewitt to make the Cyprus recording, and after he completed that, tried to kill him the day before the bomb was supposed to go off. He escaped death and hid in a secret apartment, when Sherry called him, offering him protection from Kingsley and to meet her. Bauer arrives at Hewitt's place right before the meeting was to take place.

The name is most likely derived from the Second Wave of the Apocalypse mentioned in the quatrains of Nostradamus.
The concept of gaining money from oil was later used in the show's fifth season.
In Day 4, the fourth season, Tomas Sherek, before he is arrested, is shown to have been connected with Second Wave.
