Serenity (Christian comic)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Serenity is a manga-influenced comic series created by Realbuzz Studios and published by Barbour Publishing in 2005 and 2006. It incorporates strong Christian morals, such as forgiveness, responsibility, and unconditional love as it follows title character Serenity Harper through her experiences with a local prayer group. The series, along with the phrase "Oops, can't show that in a Christian manga!" (which comes from a censor box found in the comic itself), has become a minor meme on 4chan.
[edit] Characters
- Serenity Harper: 15-year-old Serenity Harper has lots of troubles. For one, she has a very dysfunctional relationship with her mother Blossom, who has been in Los Angeles jail many times. When she first comes to James Madison High School, the kids of the Prayer Club try to befriend her, but she simply tries to make things harder for them -- and herself. Eventually, she warms up to them all with the exception of Kimberly.
- Lori Martin: Lori is Serenity's best friend from the Prayer Club. She will help Serenity through any troubles she's facing and she loves hanging out with her, but she will not shun her faith or cut any slack for Serenity's misfits. She is sometimes put out by Serenity's actions.
- Derek Angstrom: Leader of the school's Prayer Club and a popular student, but a young man haunted by his own past. He was an alcoholic along with a friend at age 12, but his friend died while his parents sought medical help. Now, Derek has joined a group at school that helps teens overcome other troubles. Derek is also Kimberly Calvin's boyfriend. He enjoys having Serenity as a friend but hates it when she takes her 'love' for him too far.
- Kimberly Calvin: Derek's girlfriend, a preacher's kid who is no little angel when it comes to defending her boyfriend against Serenity's romantic overtures. But she is also nice, and she will help Serenity when necessary, although she tries not to help her too much as it may seem Serenity will try to have a romantic attachment to Derek.
- Sally Richmond: Playful, mischievous and brimming with awful puns, she's willing to stoop to any trick to get Serenity on the straight and narrow. Sally once brought a "purity test" to school, but it was banned by her parents and the kids decided to abandon it.
- Tim: The Prayer Club's resident electronic genius and music video creator. He has somewhat of a bad temper at times and also is very insecure about himself.
- Eddie: A quiet farm boy that is also in the Prayer Club. He enjoys classical music.
- Ms. Baxter: A radical feminist and very anti-religion instructor who has been cast as a negative influence on Serenity.
- Pastor Calvin: Kimberly's father and a local minister. Though generally a nice person, he is exceptionally strict with his daughter. He hosts the weekly Youth Group bible study.
- Mr. Grandy: An instructor who is also a Christian. He has plays somewhat of a mentoring role to Serenity.
- Blossom: Blossom is Serenity's mother, a New Age following Hippie who is wary of her daughter hanging around the Prayer Club. She is usually harsh and obnoxious, but she really does love Serenity with all her heart.
- Tinkerbelle: Tinkerbelle is Serenity's pet Turantula. Tinkerbelle is the cause of some large scares, but she is harmless and friendly.
