Shabiyah
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shabiyah (Arabic: شعبية) (plural: Shabiyat, شعبيات) is a country subdivision of Libya. The term ("شعبية") is Arabic for "popular" or "popularity" (literal meaning) and can be roughly translated as municipality or better province, given it is the highest adminstrative level. Lower level equivalent to county exists and divide each Shabiyah into smaller entities. The term is new and exclusive to Libya, in line with having exclusive terms for republic (jamahiriya), ministry (amanah), embassy (people's-bureau), all of which are different from what is used in all Arabic-speaking countries including Libya itself before adopting the neology. For a most recent Shabiyat-system of Libya (map), see administrative divisions in Libya.
