Talk:Sholing

I did some research on the derivation on Spike Island, but google is no substitution for local knowledge. Nevertheless, I cannot find any substantiation for that it is named after the penal colony or a negative association with gypsies. What I did substantiate is that a one-time vast military hospital at Netley, on the eastern edge of Southampton was named or nicknamed called Spike Island. See e.g., [1], I suspect this is hogwash and the name derives from the hospital.--Fuhghettaboutit 03:08, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Spike Island and gypsies
In Sholing the Spike Island pub is nearby a small community of gypsies. It is a common site to see a horse and trap on the roads around Sholing and the gypsy's have been there many years I have no idea what this has to do with a place called 'Spike Island' but I do know there is a gypsy heritage in Sholing
