Skepchick International
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Skepchick is a female skeptic; the word is a portmanteau of skeptic and chick. Because the skeptical movement is largely dominated by older males, the name was coined to draw a special distinction to female skeptics. Some women take offense at the diminutive chick, so the word is best applied to oneself.
Skepchick International was started by Rebecca Watson and tries to promote scientific skepticism among women. The site features an online journal called Skepchick Magazine, and also offers an online forum and a blog. The site published a calendar of nude skepchicks in 2006 (a 1999 publication was by another skeptical organisation unrelated to Skepchick International) and used the proceeds to fundraise the attendance fee for several female applicants to attend the James Randi Educational Foundation's 2006 The Amaz!ng Meeting. In 2007 two separate calendars were published, one with males only, and one with females only.
Rebecca Watson also appears on the The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe podcast.
