[edit] Plot
Anatolii Efremovich Novoseltsev works in an institution of statistics, whose director is an unattractive woman, Liudmila Prokofievna Kalugina. Novoseltsev is considered to be very perspective employee by everyone except his boss. That's why his old friend, Yuri Grigorievich Samohvalov, who is appointed assistant director of the institution, suggests to Kalugina to make Novoseltsev head of department. But Kalugina rejects the suggestion. Then, following Samohvalov's piece of advise, Novoseltsev begins to lightly hit on "Mymra" (as they called Kalugina). Started for selfish ends, these courting grow into real love between Kalugina and Novoseltsev.
In parallel with the development of the relationship between Anatolii Efremovich and Liudmila Prokofievna, another office romance is reveled: the one between Olga Ryjova and Yuri Samohvalov, who were dating while at the University. Now both of them have families but Olga's feelings break out again even though with no mutuality from the part of Samohvalov. She writes a lot of letters to him, one of them being accidentally read by Verochka, the secretary. She tells what she finds out to another employee and thus the whole collective begins gossiping about Olga Ryjova. Moreover, Samohvalv, tired of this wave of love letters, gives them to the biggest taleteller of the institution, Shura, who wants to discuss the "psychological problem" of their colleague at local committee. Kalugina finds that out and forbids the discussion.
Novoseltsev also finds out Samohvalov's actions and slaps him in the face, to which Samohvalov promisses to hit back but otherwise. When he is sure that Kalugina and Novoseltsev are in love with each other, he revels the initial plan to Kalugina. She gets really upset and wants to give up Novoseltsev. But after a funny fight between her and her lover, the film ends with a good kiss.
As for Ryjova, she gets back all the letters and returns to her normal life, embarrassed and humiliated.
