The Socialist Party of Michigan (SPMI) is the state affiliate of the Socialist Party USA in the U.S. state of Michigan.
It was reorganized following the dissolution of the Socialist Party of America and the subsequent formation of the Socialist Party USA in 1973. In 2004 SPMI activists sought the roughly 30,000 signatures necessary for recognition as a major party in Michigan, but fell short.
The Socialist Party of Michigan engages in both electoral politics and non-electoral activism. Current electoral activities in 2006 include Matt Erard's campaign for the Michigan State House of Representatives in the 53rd District in Ann Arbor. In 2004, Ben Burgis ran as a Socialist/Green candidate for Michigan State University Trustee, receiving nearly 75,000 votes and spoiling the election of Democrat Phil Thompson. Non-electoral activism includes support for unions and unionization (often in cooperation with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)), anti-war and anti-imperialist agitation, and support for feminism and women's rights.
The Socialist Party of Michigan hosted the Socialist Party USA's biannual Organizing Conference in Detroit in August, 2006. SPMI has a chartered local in Kalamazoo and used to have another in Detroit.
