[edit] History
One of the United Kingdom’s newest universities, it was made a university college on 1 November 2004 and, as such, now has the powers to award its own degrees. Formerly although courses were taught there the degrees were awarded and accredited by Nottingham Trent University. It was upgraded to university status on August 15, 2005.
Southampton Solent University evolved from Southampton Institute, which in turn evolved from The Southampton College of Art. The Southampton College of Art established itself in Southampton in September 1855, seven years before the Hartley Institution - the origin of University of Southampton.
Southampton Solent University is ranked 107th of 109 in The Times newspaper’s 2007 league table [2].
