[edit] Sports
Southwestern High School engages competitively in various sports.
-Basketball - Earlier this year, the boy's basketball team won the district title, defeating McCreary Central and Wayne County. In the regionals, the team defeated Lincoln County and East Jessamine before being dominated by 12th region champion Boyle County in the finals 67-51.
-Soccer - the soccer program is perhaps the most decorated of all Warrior athletic programs. In 1998, the SWHS boy's soccer team won both District and Reginal Championships. In 2003, the boy's soccer team went as far as Kentucky State Final Four, after nearly losing District, Region, and Sub-Section Championships. In 2004, the boy's soccer team fired back with another mediocre soccer season, playing their way through both the District and Regional levels, but bowed out to the South Laurel Cardinals in the State Sweet Sixteen. Last season, both the boys (coached by Omar Prone) and the girls (coached by Matt Cook) brought home District titles.
The Warriors hired a new boys' soccer coach this year, former Somerset High School journeyman player James Ray. Although not physically gifted as a player, this new hire will undoubtedly import several coaching tenants learned from the notorious coaches at Somerset.
-Football- Southwestern football is one of the most tradition-rich programs in south-central Kentucky. It is a powerhouse in division 3A football. Under the tenure of the Commonwealth Journal's coach of the year, the Warriors have made a statement on the gridiron. Their home field, reverently nicknamed the reservation, has seen its great share of Kentucky Mr. Football candidates as well as successful college players. The Warriors have amassed an impressive win percentage against the other members of their district, and the future looks bright.
