Speedmechanicstransmission.jpg (276 × 392 pixel, file size: 42 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)
Cover of Speed Mechanics magazine, showing cutaway of typical automobile manual transmission. Input shaft is on right, countershaft is at bottom, output shaft is on top, output yoke is on left. A silvery synchro collar can be seen on the upper shaft, on the right of the silver gear. The teeth on the synchro ring attached to that gear are barely visible between the gear and the collar. The other silvery ring, to the left of the red gear, is attached to the nonsynchromesh red gear and slides it side to side; when it is in mesh with the rightmost red gear on the countershaft the transmission is in first gear, when it is in the leftwards position the transmission is in reverse and it meshes with the red reverse idler gear, which is partially visible next to the leftmost red gear on the countershaft by which it is driven. The small size of the red driving gears on the countershaft compared to the large red driven gear on the upper, output shaft identifies it as low, or first gear; compare to the approximately 1:1 ratio of the two silver gears.
