Sprachregelung
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sprachregelung is a German language term meaning "language ruling". It is most commonly used in connection with media and politics when it comes to disputed or sensitive subjects.
As an example, when the Federal Republic of Germany did not recognize the German Democratic Republic, one of the "Sprachregelungen" adopted over time was to refer to the latter only by its abbreviation, "DDR", which was meant to be derogatory.
Also, euphemisms of Nazi Germany, like "final solution" for what is today known as the Holocaust, may be regarded as a case of "Sprachregelung".
