Spring Fire

Spring Fire, written by M.E. Kerr, under the pseudonym of Vin Packer, is often considered to be the first lesbian pulp novel.
The novel was published by Gold Medal in 1952 and sold more than 1.5 million copies. It tells the story of two college girls, Mitch and Leda, who fall in love and have an affair. The tragic ending of this book is typical of lesbian pulp novels. Because items sent through the U.S. Postal Service were subject to government censorship, homosexuality could not be portrayed positively. A homosexual character had to turn or, if she remained homosexual, suffer death, insanity or some equally unappealing fate.
