[edit] Overview
St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School is an independent nursey, elementary, and middle school in Washington, D.C., spanning Pre-K through eighth grade. It is affiliated with and shares a building with St. Patrick's Episcopal Church.
[edit] History
Founded in 1956, the school has grown from a nursery school in a townhouse basement to a 400-plus student institution stretching over two capuses in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington. In 2002, the school completed a major addition and renovation, which converted the outdoor "Play Court" into a three-story academic wing with six classrooms for grades 2 and 3 and a large library with floor-to-ceiling windows. The construction also involved the building of a new gym/stage across the street from the main building, the conversion of the old gym into an art studio, playroom, and conference room and the addition of a glassed-in foyer and reception area to the front of the school. The school began a seventh and eighth grade program in 2001, providing an option for students who were not accepted into other independent schools or simply did not want to go through the application process. Originally extremely small and meeting in a portion of another school's property, the St. Patrick's middle school has grown to near-capacity. It is now housed in a renovated house on MacArthur Boulevard, which state-of-the-art science labs and nice, though small, classrooms for other subjects. When the project was originally proposed, neighbors included then-Advisory Neighborhood Commission Chair Alma Gates, were concerned about the potential for noise and unruly children. The project passed the Zoning Board with many restrictions and, as a result, use of the music room on campus is still prohibited. In addition, students must be dropped off and picked up by their parents from the Whitehaven (elementary school) Campus several blocks away and be bused to their building.
