STS-144 was a proposed mission of the United States' Space Shuttle program to send the Space Shuttle Columbia to retrieve the Hubble Space Telescope from orbit and bring it back to Earth.[citation needed] The mission was tentatively scheduled for November 2009.
After the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, this mission, along with others, was cancelled, and NASA is unlikely to attempt to recover the Hubble with a shuttle. NASA must find another way to bring the telescope safely back to Earth or, more likely, find a way to control its re-entry so that it breaks up safely. However, plans have been made now for an additional shuttle flight, STS-125, to service the Hubble Space Telescope one final time.
