Stuarts Draft High School is in the town of Stuarts Draft in south-eastern Augusta County, Virginia. The school opened in 1971 during a consolidation period for the county’s public schools, Stuarts Draft High School served grades 8 through 12, and housed the 7th grade due to overcrowding at Stuarts Draft Elementary School. Today it serves 780 students in grades 9 to 12. While there are pockets of poverty in the area, the student population can be described generally as middle class.
A middle and elementary school have been built in proximity to Stuarts Draft High School, creating one of two school complexes in the county. Seven percent of the student body is African American and one percent is Hispanic. Eleven percent of the students receive special education services. Stuarts Draft High School performs respectably on standardized tests. The school maintains an 87% pass rate on SOL end-of-course tests; the mean SAT verbal and math score is 509 and 523 respectively. Sixty-three percent of Stuarts Draft seniors attend college; of that number, 35% go to four-year institutions. Students are “Cougars” (the high school mascot) from their earliest years. Local businesses and industry support the school and its programs as a result.
The school will undergo major renovations beginning in April 2006. New science classrooms will be added as well as a competition gym. Older classrooms, fine arts space, administrative offices, and the cafeteria will be rehabbed. The library is included in the renovation plans. Plans to enclose the library, add more computer work stations, increase shelving, improve lighting, move the server, and create office space for the instructional tech will rectify some of the most egregious shortcomings.
