Subliminal Plastic Motives is the debut album from Self. It found some success with MTV and had videos for "So Low" and "Cannon," and is easily Self's most widely known and popular release. The album was released by Spongebath Records and was immediately picked up by Zoo Entertainment (now Volcano Records). It received very good scores from music critics, as well, primarily for it's eclectic take on rock music, garnering comparisons to artists such as Beck. Fans hold the album in high regard and most of the songs are considered classics. Although, it's Self's most "basic" album, and has a less varied sound than future Self albums, it's still a very creative effort, and it also showed the roots of Self's experimentation with genres, which would come to prominence on Self's next three albums.
