Sullenearth

Sullenearth is a publishing company that was established in 2000. It was started to fill a void in the publishing industry by publishing low budget black and white comics.

In 2001 Sullenearth expanded with the launch of a website, Sullenearth.com, an online resource for comics, games and graphic novels.

History Started by artist Jeff Hibben, a black and white illustrator whose career started in 2000 with Deadtooth, a graphic novel in the vein of Sin City, which follows Winzer Pinehalter the famed scientist and paranormal investigator, Through the streets of 1880’s London England. Deadtooth was an instant success with the x generation. It harkened back to a time where 2d imagery and non-airbrushed representations were the norm. The days before Photoshop.

In the highly competitive market of comic book publishing, Jeff Hibben found a niche were others failed by self publishing his first book under the company name Sullenearth and marketed it using the low budget techniques of any other startup company. With a home printer and paper folder Jeff, began his publishing company the old-fashioned way. Without the use of expensive machines and high budget print runs he began promoting his illustrations from home on the internet then branched out to the community of which he lived.

Products The first comic published under Sullenearth was Deadtooth Vol. 1; it was created in Jeff’s office and was later published by Cafepress to keep up with higher demand. Sullenearth has since gown to three titles (Deadtooth, Bleak and Swansea) and is finding a market in the board game arena. While more and more game companies are branching out to the 3d arena Sullenearth holds it’s own in the 2d realm with incorporating characters from it’s publish works into a board game setting.

Deadtooth was the first comic to be released by the newly formed Sullenearth Comics in 2000.

Winzer Pinehalter the famed paranormal psychologist and investigator of the unnatural. Goes on a quest to solve some mysterious deaths taking place in 1880’s London England.

Chamberlin Davies: Swordsman, acrobat and entertainer, a side act in the world’s largest traveling freak show. Disguised as a mime/clown, the only "normal" human act, not taking into account his unbelievable ability with knives, swords and acrobatics. Bastard son of one of the freaks in the show, he was left anonymously by the back of the main tent one night with a note. By all visual signs he acted and looked "normal." The tattooed woman raised him as her own child and when he came-of-age he was forced to develop an act or be forced to live with "normal" people in the city. So he started developing his skills in the sword-arts and acrobatics. After numerous years of training he was granted his own act. Chamberlin was loved and accepted as their own son. After many years of calm a new member was added to the show by the name of Sancho. He was younger and had an agenda of his own.

Sancho: The unofficial leader of the freaks... a "wolf-boy" from Juarez, Mexico. Sancho, angry about his disfigured condition and angry at God, convinces his carnival of freaks to take back what is owed to them. Convincing the disgruntled sideshow freaks, Sancho formulates a plan to kill, maim and disfigure all attending one night in a small town outside the city. Knowing full well that Chamberlin would object to the onslaught and jealous of Chamberlin, Sancho’s henchmen, the bag headed disfigured tent-stake men, knock Chamberlin out with their large hammers and tie him up during the carnage. During the carnage Chamberlin wakes up and is helpless to do anything.

The freaks escape into the city. They go into hiding and during the night they rob, kill and do whatever it takes to survive. Chamberlin, horrified at what the freaks have done, goes on a vengeful hunt to right what has been done wrong. He makes a pledge to take down the freak mob, find Sancho and make him pay.

Chamberlin: “11:34pm (hell upside-down) April 1st (April fools day), the night Hell came to Merriville.”

Setting: Modern day big city.

The title is Sullenearth's longest running title.
