Susila Budhi Dharma

Susila Budhi Dharma is a book written by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, the founder of the World Subud Association at the historic city of Jogjakarta in 1952. Its name corresponds to the three main qualities that are to be developed through the training in the Subud path. The name "Subud" is an acronym that stands for these three Javanese words of Sanskrit derivation.
The book refers to the series of experiences a practitioner of Subud may go through in the process of training his/her inner feeling in practical life. Therefore it describes how one can feel the different influences of the forces that accompany human beings in this world, i.e. material, vegetable, animal and ordinary human forces. Through being aware of the way they influence the inner feeling, it is shown how it is possible to become a channel for those forces and be in control of them, to rule on them as the instruments they are supposed to be, given by God to man for living in this world and stop allowing them to rule on man; through the support of the great life force.
There is an abundance of examples of how to use the latihan (the spiritual training exercise of Subud) in the daily life, in order to be able to put into practice what one can receive from God. So different situations are described where one can feel and receive what happens in the inner feeling when approaching this or that circumstance. All this is aimed at being trained in understanding the various indications that originate in the inner feeling so that human beings may be able to overcome the pressure of ancillary forces and consequently develop the true human qualities and faculties. It is clear that other creatures, animals for instance, regularly have a better sensitivity than ordinary humans do, they are capable of forseeing natural disasters, rain, drought, etc. True humans when they recover their original nature through the Grace of God, are not only capable of having such sensitivity, but also an awareness that allows them to behave spontaneously in a way that is wholesome and happy, as humans are supposed to be.
The quality of "Susila" describes a state in which human beings can behave as noble creatures because they have a clear connection within that allows them to have a spontaneous consciousness of what is right and what is wrong. "Budhi" is part of God's authority which was placed inside every creature. When this Budhi is directed voluntarily by man in the direction of God's Will, then his life will become a sequence of miracles."Dharma" is the projection in practical human life of God's blessing. Therefore all forms of human activity, such as business, arts, education, health, etc. may become expressions of the miraculous; projections of the Grace that man has received within, but expressed in an outer form that brings welfare and happiness to the people who get in touch with it. That is what is called by the founder of Subud "The True Human Culture".
The book was written in High-Javanese language and Kawi, and it was received in the form of a poem, accompanied by beautiful traditional Javanese mellodies. It is recommended only for Subud members, since someone who has not experienced the latihan of Subud will try to understand the explanations of the book with his/her heart and mind and cannot relate them to his/her own experience.
