Sydney Swifts
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sydney Swifts are an Australian netball team, playing in the national Commonwealth Bank Trophy. They are based out of the Sydney Superdome and Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in the suburb of Homebush. They are currently the only team representing the city of Sydney, since the 2003 demise of the Sydney Sandpipers. The Swifts are currently coached by Julie Fitzgerald and captained by Liz Ellis.
In 2006 they achieved a feat not recorded in Australian sport for 47 years - an unbeaten season in the national league. Captain Liz Ellis recovered from a knee reconstruction to lead a group of tough athletes in devastating form, and take out the MVP award for the third time.
The Swifts have been among the most perennially successfully teams in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, having won the premiership in three out of its ten years, been in the grand final in several more, and making the finals series every year so far. The team has been particularly successful in recent times, winning overall in 2004 and having a brilliant 2005 season, only to lose to the Melbourne Phoenix in the grand final, then trouncing the Adelaide Thunderbirds by 29 goals in 2006.
