[edit] Euler characteristic
Hi. While I'm not directly responsible for the deletion of what you wrote, I did suggest in the FA nomination talk that this might be best suited for a separate, more technically involved article discussing Euler's mathematical importance in more details. I recently created Contributions of Leonhard Euler to mathematics where I will add back your content. Cheers. Pascal.Tesson 23:21, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. pom 10:59, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oh my, I'm sorry- I should have consulted with you first. When you're trying to balance the requests of many different people on how to improve the article, you overlook some things unfortunately :(. Could you rewrite the gist of your material in the main Euler article in slightly more layman's terms? What the discussion in the FAC suggested was that one page for the technical math, and the main biography page containing a brief summary (feel free to be as mathy as you want in contributions of Leonhard Euler to mathematics). Once again, I apologize for the abrupt removal- I hope you weren't offended by my mistake. Borisblue 02:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. Actually, I agree that the best place to put it was contributions of Leonhard Euler to mathematics. Maybe Leonhard Euler page should link to it ? pom 15:27, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- It's already linked (under the heading "contributions to mathematics"). Thanks for the contribution! Borisblue 16:59, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 'Notability'
You asked something about this. As far as biographies of mathematicians are concerned, I would say something like this: must have at least a national reputation, must have some particular result(s) which can be described to someone outside the immediate field. Charles Matthews 21:08, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- It seems really unrestrictive to me. Should we not require at least an international reputation with at least some reference result (for the community) which also can be described to someone outside the immediate field ? pom 18:04, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
After three years or so discussing the idea of 'notability', no real progress has been made. Of course I don't recommend adding anyone 'minor'. From the point of view of good taste, one should set higher standards. Charles Matthews 19:33, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
By the way, for a mathematician, I can explain it this way: if the value of an article is infinitesimal, then arguing whether the infinitesimal is positive or negative is a bad idea (the smaller the infinitesimal, the longer the argument, in inverse proportion to the usefulness of any result ... ) Charles Matthews 12:33, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- Nice answer. Donte Acte pom 22:46, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Virtual classroom
I've set up the Virtual classroom (VC), which is a forum for the discussion of advanced Wikipedia skills. It differs from the help forums on Wikipedia in that major topics of discussion are scheduled and once started remain continuous.
The reason I'm contacting you is because one of the class assignments is a comparison of our user interfaces. A lot can be learned from individual users, who usually have developed their own ways of doing things. I noticed you are an expert programmer, so you no doubt have some tricks up your sleeve. I'm hoping that you will stop by and share and compare the interfaces you use when browsing and working on Wikipedia. I've also constructed a tools page which presents everything learned from these discussions, and it is growing -- there are some pretty powerful techniques on there now. Even Interiot, Rich Farmbrough, and CBDunkerson have participated in the VC to show off their tools and methods. It's been a lot of fun, and you are invited. The interface topics are called:

I look forward to seeing you there and to learning your wikiways. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 23:02, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] World's Smallest Political Quiz userbox
You may be interested in User:Audacity/Userboxes/WSPQ, which is a replacement for the old Political Chart userbox. The new userbox takes the two variables (economic and personal freedom), calculates which political alignment they place you into (Statist, Libertarian, Liberal, Centrist, or Conservative), and links your userpage to the appropriate category.
Please reply to User talk:Audacity, as I will not be watching your talk page. Λυδαcιτγ 07:48, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
