[edit] High school career
Taylor Mehlhaff was a three sport athlete at Aberdeen Central (SD) High School playing football, track and field, and ice hockey. In 2003, Taylor Mehlhaff led the Aberdeen Central football program to the SDHSAA Class 11AA finals, only to be beaten by Spearfish (SD) at the Dakota Dome. Mehlhaff was named 2003 Gatorade South Dakota High School Player of the Year. While at Aberdeen Central Mehlhaff was also the starting quarterback and free safety along with place kicking duties.
Mehlhaff was rated by Rivals.com as the number one place kicking prospect in the United States in 2003, and was a first-team High School All-American from Ridell and a Second-Team High School All-American from USA Today.
Taylor Mehlhaff signed on to Wisconsin after hefty competition from Rice, Minnesota, and Nebraska to acquire Mehlhaff. Mehlhaff signed onto the Badgers, despite first year Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan made an eleventh hour offer before the national signing period in 2004 to land Mehlhaff.
[edit] College career
At Wisconsin, Taylor Mehlhaff first started as a place kicker for kickoffs in 2004, but took on all kicking duties in 2005. Mehlhaff booted his career longest field goal a 52 yarder against Arkansas that sealed a Capital One Bowl win against a feisty Arkansas squad. Mehlhaff was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza award in 2006, and is a potential candidate for consideration for the 2007 season. Mehlhaff did not miss a PAT attempt during the 2006 season.
