Talk:Terry Waite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I am very interesed in the source for the story that Terry Waite had a listening device on him when negotiating, and whether he was aware of it or not.
Any reliable sources? The article here seems to support this contention: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,7374-2101966,00.html
specfically the quote : "That would not necessarily have led to my captivity in Beirut had it not been for political duplicity [of others] where trust between me and the kidnappers was broken."
Hi..
Dont realy know if this is relevant to your question but on just finishing the book "taken on trust" as written by terry waite during his time in captivity, he makes no mention of this and also seems a man of quite high moral standards who would try his best to keep out of the political side of things. i honestly do not beleive he would have worn a wire with prior knowledge. this is demonstrated in the book at several points.. eg.. he refuses to take a package from a hostage he is visiting so as not to ruin the trust of their kidnappers if found.
I hope this clears it up a bit for you..
Ps; i can not recommend taken on trust enough. (if you have not previously read it.
I have only just come across this entry and was not aware that I featured in the enclycopedia. To answer the question, I did not at anytime carry a listening device. Had I done so I certainly would not be alive today. You will note that I have amended the entry under my name. I did not return to negotiate the Iran Contra deal. I was totally unaware of this matter and had I known of it would certainly have had nothing to do with it whatsoever. Terry Waite.
