Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities

The Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities is a dual-credit high school located at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Often referred to as TALH, the program allows high school juniors and seniors to attend college level classes in order to complete their high school requirements, while at the same time gaining credits that must be accepted by any Texas public college.

Potential TALH students are required to submit an application with the following information:
- A TALH application, either received from the Academy offices at Lamar University or found at their website.[1]
- A 500-1000 word personal essay.
- A resume of non-classroom activities.
- An English teacher recommendation.
- A recommendation from either the principal or councelor of your high school.
- A SAT score of 1000, with at least 500 points in the critical reading section and 500 points in the mathematics section, or an ACT score of at least 21.
- THEA test scores, unless otherwise exempt.
- 8th, 9th, and 10th grade official transcripts.
The application deadline is rolling, but all applications to be sereously considered must be received by April 15th. After an application is submitted, the prospective student may be asked for an interview. Two weeks to a month after the interview, the prospective student will be informed as to whether or not they have been accepted.
The academy is highly selective, acausing the class size remain small, with approximately forty-one students graduating the program in 2006.[2]
[edit] Housing and Classes
TALH students are housed at 'Cardinal Village II', a dorm building built specifically for the academy students. Students are required to return to the dorms, which have automatically locking gates, by a strict curfew of 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Students from the academy attend classes at Lamar University, and have a full-time schedule of college classes that must meet their high school requirements before allowing elective classes.
[edit] Scolarships and Extra Activities
All students attending TALH receive a 100% scholarship for full tuition and fees. Students may also qualify for financial aid and other scholarships. TALH students attend special programs such as operas and plays in local areas that enhance the student's appreciation for the arts.
