Control: The Ian Curtis film is a biopic film in the making about the late Ian Kevin Curtis (1956-1980), lead singer of the legendary post-punk rock band Joy Division. The screenplay will be based on the book Touching From a Distance, by Curtis' wife, Deborah, who is also a co-producer of the upcoming film.
The film will detail the life of the troubled young musician, who forged a new kind of music out of the punk rock scene of 1970's Britain, and the band Joy Division, which he headed from 1977 to 1980. It will also deal with his rocky marriage and extramarital affair, as well as his increasingly frequent seizures, which were thought to contribute to the circumstances that lead to his untimely suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first U.S. tour.
The title is a hail to one of Joy Division's more memorable songs, "She's Lost Control", which many feel Ian Curtis wrote as a reference to his own life.

The filming of the movie began on July 3, 2006 and lasted for seven weeks. Anton Corbijn is the film's director, who has been a devout Joy Division fan since the band's early days in the late 1970's. He directed the post-humous Joy Division 1988 "Atmosphere" video, and has since gone on to direct music videos for such bands as Depeche Mode, Nirvana and U2. Control marks Corbijn's debut as a movie director, and he paid half of the €4.5million budget out of his own pocket.[1] The film is being shot in "black and white" to "reflect the atmosphere of Joy Division and the mood of the era."[2] Todd Eckert and Orian Williams, based out of Los Angeles, are the producers. Deborah Curtis, Ian Curtis' widow, is a co-producer, along with British music mogul Tony Wilson. Wilson was the one who gave Joy Division their TV break on the rock music programme So It Goes, and he also founded Factory Records, which distributed most of Joy Division's work.
Recently, Peter Hook noted his displeasure with Anton Corbijn in an interview for Channel 4 Teletext, claiming the director has been too controlling of the production of the soundtrack, saying:
"I'm pissed about the movie right now because Anton Corbijn seems to be getting too much control. I would have preferred that he showed more respect for us. That's what he should do. Anton is too passionate about the movie but I think he should have a wider view. At the beginning he would say, 'Come everyone to help,' but now he closed the doors and sent everyone to piss off! We're supposed to (do the soundtrack) but the problem is that he's telling us what to do. If we don't tell him how to direct, why is he telling us how to make music? Bernard (Sumner) and Stephen (Morris) seem to be OK about it but it bothers me a lot."[3]
After the script for the film was finished in May of 2005, the movie was filmed on location in Nottingham, Manchester and Macclesfield, England, as well as other European venues.
Filming in and around Barton Street (where Curtis lived and died), Macclesfield took place on July 11th & 12th, 2006.
According to MOJO magazine the film will be released late March to early April.
[edit] Soundtrack
New Order, the post-Curtis incarnation of Joy Division, will produce much of the music. They will be recording new songs and re-recording several old Joy Division songs under their old name.[4] Bands that have been approached to record music for the soundtrack CD (which will be titled Out of Control) are: U2, The Killers, Autolux, and Doves. Other bands that have been rumored include The Cure, Bauhaus, The Creatures, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Depeche Mode. The Killers have recorded a version of "Shadowplay" for the soundtrack as well.
