The Daily Gamecock (formerly the The Gamecock) is the daily editorially independent newspaper of the University of South Carolina. It primarily serves the main campus of the University in Columbia and regional campuses of the University of South Carolina System, in the state of South Carolina. As of March 2007, The Daily Gamecock has a daily readership of about 30,000 readers with a daily circulation of about 16,000.

[edit] Overview
The print version of The Daily Gamecock is published Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters and nine times during the summer, with the exception of university holidays and exam periods. In the Fall semester of 2006 then The Gamecock newspaper began being published Monday through Friday in print and online for the first time in its 98-year history, the first college paper in South Carolina to do so and changed its name to The Daily Gamecock. The Daily Gamecock [1]has an online version of the newspaper and also publishes it daily, Monday through Friday.
Opinions expressed in The Daily Gamecock are those of the editors or author and not those of the University of South Carolina. Unsigned editorials represent the majority opinion of the editorial board and are the official opinion of the university.
Circulating 14,000 papers each weekday, The Daily Gamecock is South Carolina's 10th largest newspaper, according to the South Carolina Press Association, and has been publishing since 1908.
[edit] Recent history & the DG today
In the Fall semester of 2006 the then weekly The Gamecock newspaper began being published Monday through Friday in print and online for the first time in its 98-year history, the first college paper in South Carolina to do so and changed its name to The Daily Gamecock.
On January 16, 2007 the paper added the new The Metro section of its newspaper. The new sections mission is to inform students of the happenings within the City of Columbia, due to the large amount of students who live off campus. As well in Janurary The Daily Gamecock begin enhance its online site and to move into the new age of journlism by creating a daily blog that is written by the members of it's staff. The blog like most of the stories online gives the reader the ability to leave comments for the staff. The blog provides The Daily Gamecock to give commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news that may have not been published otherwise; some function as more personal online diaries.
The Daily Gamecock in recent years has won dozens of South Carolina Press Association awards for its news, opinion, feature and content, as well as design, in a competition that places the paper in competition with professional daily newspapers across the state.

The Daily Gamecock prints all-original coverage for its daily news, metro,"Gamecock Sports", viewpoints, "The Scence at USC", and comics, as well as its daily “Mix,” (arts and entertainment).
The Daily Gamecock also publishes design winning Firday Football Blitz and On the Flip Side, boardsheet-format specials released bi-weekly, firday before and the monday after Gamecock football games.

The Daily Gamecock has won many prestigious awards for its writing staff and design crew.
The Daily Gamecock was a finalist of the Associated Collegiate Press' "Pacemaker Award" in 1999.
March 2006 The Daily Gamecock was recognized by the South Carolina Press Association for excellence for its in-depth coverage of Hurricane Katrina where eight of The Daily Gamecock’s staff drove to hurricane-affected areas in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi to cover the story first hand.
The Daily Gamecock is a proud member of the Associated Collegiate Press, South Carolina Press Association and Letters to the editor.
[edit] Operations and governance
The Daily Gamecock goes to press five issues per week in the fall and spring semesters, and once a week for 9 weeks during the summer. Daily print distribution is 14,000 copies across the University campus and regional campuses in the USC System. The newspaper is printed at the press of the The State Newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, and all issues are free.
In an average year, the newspaper’s staff exceeds 100 students, who are all volunteers. The paper’s main staff of editors include four members of the Managing Board, ten copy editors, two online editors, two photography editors, two design editors, one Graduate Assistant, over ten section editors and two people responsible for "horses-assing" the other staff members. These are all elected by the staff during the Fall and Spring smesters.
