The Kitchen God's Wife

The Kitchen God's Wife is a novel published in 1991 and written by Amy Tan. It, like her most popular book, The Joy Luck Club, is a story of mothers and daughters. The book starts with the daughter Pearl, who, like the author, is a speech therapist. Pearl has a secret from her mother: she has Multiple Sclerosis. When her Auntie Helen says that she can no longer keep her secret, she panics. Little does she know that her mother, Winnie, has kept a few secrets from her as well. Winnie begins to talk from her point of view in chapter three "When Fish Are Three Days Old." She speaks for most of the book, telling her life story and all the secrets entangled in it to her daughter. When she finishes, the point of view changes back to Pearl. She is shocked, but reveals her medical secret after her mother finishes.
