The March is a 2005 historical fiction novel by E. L. Doctorow. It won the 2005 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
The novel follows the story of the Union Army under William Tecumseh Sherman during the American Civil War. It takes place from the end of the Atlanta Campaign in September 1864 through Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign to just after the surrender of Confederate Army forces under Joseph E. Johnston at Bennett Place on April 26, 1865.
The novel's characters include Sherman and other military leaders, including Henry Warner Slocum and Ulysses S. Grant, in addition to a variety of fictional soldiers and civilians from both sides of the conflict.
