The Poopsmith is a fictional character from the Homestar Runner series of cartoons. Although his job is not discussed onscreen, he is usually depicted shoveling poop. The King of Town employs the Poopsmith for "reasons he does not care to disclose," implying that the voracious King produced the huge mound which must be shoveled.
As a result of his occupation, he smells terrible, which Strong Bad would regard as an understatement. Strong Bad also seems to be severely creeped out by him as per his being unwilling to touch the Poopsmith. Nonetheless other characters seem to respect him. The Poopsmith never speaks, as he has taken a vow of silence. However, it must be noted that in the "Senior Prom" Strong Bad E-mail, a strange voice heard offscreen saying, "Oh Yeah!" could have been the Poopsmith, as all the characters look at him and gasp when they hear it. The Poopsmith was created as a joke character, appearing right after the Blacksmith in an early cartoon called "The King of Town". He remains as the cartoon's embodiment of toilet humor. Such humor is uncommon elsewhere on the site, and the character of the Poopsmith can be interpreted as the cartoonists' way of recognizing the occasional usefulness of such humor while simultaneously keeping it strictly confined to one character who appears the least often of all the principal characters. A running gag is that he ends up saying something, usually in an imagined sequence, or put in a situation when he has to open his mouth (see picture).
There has only been one time in the history of HomestarRunner.com that The Poopsmith has actually been seen and heard talking. In the Strong Bad Email "Different Town", The Poopsmith is seen in a hypothetical scene where he says, "hello." He also hissed in a Haloween special, and gave another character a raspberry as a baby, though, being a baby, he may not have taken his vow of silence yet.

[edit] Old-Timey
Appearing only in an Easter egg, 1936's character the Demon is apparently The Poopsmith's equivalent. Although no connection is explicitly made, the two characters share a similar character design.
[edit] The Castlefunnies - Mushy Chamberpot
Strong Bad claims that The Poopsmith has always been employed by the King of Town, and originally appeared alongside the King in an unfunny comic strip called The Castlefunnies. He only spoke in word balloons filled with commas (which had just been discovered), and was referred to by the name "Mushy Chamberpot," as it was considered treasonous to write the word "poop" in the newspaper.
