The Red Shoes was a 1993 Broadway musical by Jule Styne, adapted from a 1947 film based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale about a young girl who can not stop dancing when wearing a pair of red shoes.
The music was scored by Jule Styne and Marsha Norman, with by lyrics by Norman and Paul Stryker. It starred Roger Rees, Hugh Panaro, George de la Peña, Leslie Browne, Tad Ingram and Margaret Illmann.
The Red Shoes was choreographed by Lar Lubovitch and the direction was by film director Stanley Donen, whose only previous Broadway credit was as a 16-year-old dancer in the original Pal Joey at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Mr. Styne's score re-used music from other shows. After about 50 previews, the musical opened to poor reviews and closed after just 6 real performances.
Later programmes don't include Roger Rees in the cast. He was replaced by Steve Barton as the impresario Lermontov.
