The Sickness is Disturbed's first album. It was recorded in the winter of 1999 and released on March 7, 2000. Different to their later albums which are mixed in style, The Sickness consists primarily of nu metal tracks.

- Lounge singer and parody artist Richard Cheese played his rendition of the song "Down With The Sickness" on his second album, Tuxicity. The track was later remastered for his 5th album, Sunny Side of the Moon. The track was also played during the remake of Dawn of the Dead
- "Shout 2000" is a cover song of the song "Shout" by Tears for Fears.
- In the live version of 'Stupify', a pre-mixed section plays at the start which includes several audio excerpts. The final and most prominent being Jame(s) Gumb's (AKA Buffalo Bill) line; "You don't know what pain is!", from 'The Silence of the Lambs', which is said when his dog is being threatened and injured by a woman he has kidnapped.
