Redwall is a series of books written by the author Brian Jacques. The Redwall series are about small animals who live in an abbey, pursuing peace and harmony when possible. Sometimes, when their lives are threatened, the protagonists must fall back on their warrior instincts to defend each other. There is great emotional range in this widely acclaimed series. Although the books are primarily aimed at children and young teenagers, people of all ages have enjoyed this series. Brian Jacques wrote his first Redwall book in 1986, titled Redwall. He has gone on to write seventeen more at a pace of approximately one per year.

[edit] Redwall Abbey
Redwall Abbey is the red sandstone abbey on the outskirts of Mossflower Woods. The creatures of Redwall are kind, caring and helpful. They are peaceful animals, and do not encourage war or fighting. Redwall Abbey was founded by Martin the Warrior and Abbess Germaine. The creaures of Redwall Abbey worked together to create a community and lived a healthy and fun lifestyle. The only time the abbey dwellers ever used violence was when their peaceful abbey was threatened by vermin and other such 'bad' creatures.
[edit] Inhabitants of the Abbey
Redwall is inhabited mainly by mice but is also home to; squirrels, otters, hedgehogs, moles, voles, badgers, birds, hares and shrews. The abbey has an abbes or an abbot who leads the people and is responsible for the people living in the abbey. sometimes the abbey mother is a badger mother. there may be one or more war animals to protect the abbey in case of any sign of danger
Dibbuns - Dibbuns are the babes of the abbey. as babes, they often do foolish things, like venturing outside, and get captured by vermin or other evil creatures for ransom
[edit] Structure of Redwall Abbey
Redwall Abbey's main ground floor is the Great Hall. Adjoining this are the Cavern Hole and the Abbot's study. The kitchens are also located on the ground level. Upstairs are the dormitories, and up even higher are the attics and various secret chambers. Below the ground floor are the famous wine cellars and many unknown underground tunnels. The foundations of Redwall Abbey, which house the tomb of Martin the Warrior and a stone statue of Abbess Germaine, are underground. Outside is the beautiful green lawns of Redwall Abbey, the abbey lake and the well-cared for Orchard. The Gatehouse is connected to the abbey wall and houses the gatekeeper or the Warrior of Redwall. Written records such as scrolls and books were stored in the Gatehouse until the completion of the library, which was one of the attic rooms. High sandstone walls surround the abbey, with four big wooden gates as the only entrances to the Abbey. The Belltower is a high tower with the Joseph Bell which is rung numerous times a day by the bellringer. When Matthias kills Cluny the Scourge with the Joseph Bell, the bell is cracked and two smaller twin bells are made from the same material.
- Great Hall - The largest hall in Redwall Abbey, where the animals eat most of the time and where large feasts, events, parties and banquets are held. Also the famous tapestry of Martin the Warrior is hung in here.
- Cavern Hole - A cosy, warm, underground room where the animals occasionally eat but which is usually used as a story telling or plot making area.
- Kitchens - The famous kitchens of Redwall Abbey where the best of foods are cooked. The Friar is in charge of the kitchen, which is a large area full of ovens, food and other cooking utensils.
- Cellars - The cellars are located underneath the kitchens. This is where the abbey drinks are brewed and stored. The cellars are normally run by a Hedgehog but not always. Many different drinks are brewed in here such as: October Ale, strawberry fizz, elderberry wine, damson wine and many different cordials and juices. Cheese are also made and stored in the Cellars.
- Dormitories - The dormitories are where the inhabitants sleep.
- Gatehouse - The gatehouse is a small house or room connected to the abbey wall. The gatehouse is the site of the written records of the abbey.
- Belltower - The Belltower is a very tall tower which contains the bells of Redwall Abbey. In Mariel of Redwall, the first bell is delivered to Redwall Abbey. It is called the Joseph Bell. In Redwall, the Joseph Bell cracks. A pair of bells are forged to replace the original. These are named the Matthias and Methuselah Bells.
- Orchard - This is where the Abbeydwellers grow all their food. They grow every kind of fruit and vegetables possible. In summer they often take meals in the orchard.
- Pond - This is where the abbeydwellers get water and they also catch fish for their meals. Otters also love to swim in the pond and dibbuns like to paddle in the shallows.
- Walls - The four walls around the abbey are named after the direction they face- North Wall, South Wall, East Wall and West Wall. The walls have wide walkways on top and they hold a wall race in summer. Sentries are also posted on the wall tops if there is an enemy threatening the abbey.
[edit] Abbots and Abbesses of Redwall
Abbots and Abbesses of Redwall are the peaceful rulers of Redwall Abbey. They were generally mice up until the time of Abbess Tansy, who was a hedgehog. After that, other species also became Abbots or Abbesses. Although they were 'peaceful' rulers of Redwall, they were quite often called upon to make plans for war when Redwall Abbey was under attack.
Here is a table of all the Abbots and Abbesses of Redwall. The words in Italics mean that the Abbot or Abbess was either alive but not Abbot or Abbess of Redwall at that time or they became Abbot or Abbess at the end of that book.

A friar is the head cook or animal incharge of the kitchens. Being splendid cooks all the abbey dwellers feasted long and well each day, whether it was scones with strawberry meadowcream or deeper'n'ever'n'turnip'n'tater'n'beetroot pie.
[edit] Salamandastron
Salamandastron is a mountain stronghold on the coastline that is ruled by badgers and inhabited by hares. It is a long extinct, hollowed out volcano. The creatures of Salamandastron are well-trained warriors, unlike the peaceful creatures of Redwall Abbey. The Badger Lords and hare of the Long Patrol protect and defend Salamandastron and the surrounding areas from bad creatures such as vermin, searats and corsairs. Like Redwall Abbey, Salamandastron has many unknown and secret passages and tunnels.
[edit] Badger Rulers of Salamandastron
A Badger Lord or Lady is the ruler of Salamandastron. Salamandastron has always been ruled by badgers who are well-trained fighters that can lift boulders even bigger than themselves.
Here is a table of all the Badger Lords Of Salamandastron. Words in Italic mean that the badger was either alive but not ruling Salamandastron, weren't made ruler of Salamandastron until the end of the book or is just indicating the time they were ruler of Salamandastron, not the book that they were in. Mattimeo is in italics because Orlando went to Salamandastron but it never said he ruled there.

[edit] The Great Sickness
Loamhedge was an abbey located south of Mossflower. It was inhabited only by mice but they had to evacuate due to a terrible plague that came and killed all living things. After the sickness Loamhedge was deserted until after a huge earthquake when it sank below the ground and was renamed the kingdom of Malkariss.

After the huge earthquake which destroyed most of Loamhedge, rats re-inhabited it and it was renamed Malkariss. A polecat ruled over the rats in Mattimeo until it was destroyed in another earthquake.

[edit] Brockhall
Brockhall is the ancestral home of badgers. It is located in the depths of Mossflower Woods. Brockhall is a large cavern beneath an ancient oak tree. During the time of Verdauga Greeneyes (before the abbey was constructed), the woodland creatures are forced to take refuge in Brockhall to escape his cruelty. They live under the guidance of Bella of Brockhall who was a wise and kind badger. After many seasons Verdauga was defeated and the Abbey was built. There was no need for Brockhall after it was built. Eventually the exact location of Brockhall was lost. During Triss two young dibbuns accidentally stumble upon the entrance to Brockhall. However it is inhabited by poisonous adders and the abbey historians are unable to explore the ancient remains of Brockhall. However they did find the secret back entrance and were able to kill the adders and find out more about Brockhall.

Southsward is a land far to the south of Mossflower and Redwall Abbey. It has a warmer climate than Mossflower and Castle Floret is located here. Floret is mentioned in The Bellmaker and was under siege from Foxwolf the Urgan Nagru. Floret is ruled by a Squirrel King and his family.

Sampetra is an island far out to sea from Mossflower country. It is a small island in the tropics and is inhabited mainly by rats and lizards. In The Pearls of Lutra Sampetra is ruled by the pine marten Emperor Ublaz.

Ruddaring is a small island in the sea off the coast of Salamandastron. It is inhabitated only by otters and in The Pearls of Lutra the otters help the Redwallers and Grath Longfletch chooses to live there.

Terramort is an island inhabitated by Corsairs and Sea Vermin. It is ruled by a Searat called Gabool the Wild. Mentioned in Mariel of Redwall, and The Bellmaker.
[edit] Green Isle
Green Isle was originally inhabited by otters until it was taken over by wild cats and the otters enslaved. In 'High Rhulain Tiria travels to save the otters and free the island.
[edit] Peace Island and Riftgard
Mentioned in Triss these islands are located west of Mossflower. Peace Island is inhabited by peaceful hedgehogs where they grow gigantic vegetable and assist Triss and Shogg on their adventure.
